Development Cooperation
Since 2000 the Directorate General of Development Cooperation
of the Federal Public Service (Ministry) of Foreign Affairs, Foreign
Trade and Development Cooperation has posted two Attachés Development
Cooperation in Washington, DC.
The Embassy of Belgium in Washington DC follows up matters
of Development Cooperation with the International Financial
Institutions (IFI) based in Washington DC (the World Bank Group,
the International Monetary Fund –IMF- and the Inter-American
Development Bank –IADB -). A particular interest is given to the
activities of the IFI in Belgium’s eighteen partner countries.
Funding for the IFI is provided by the Directorate General of
Development Cooperation (www.dgdc.be)
of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation.
An overview of the contributions of DGDC to the IFI can be obtained at the
yellow paper 2001-2006.
1. DGDC works mainly with two institution of the
World Bank Group:
the International Development Association (IDA) and to a lesser
extend the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD).
Beside providing a core contribution to IDA, also additional
contributions are allocated to the IFI on a voluntary basis by DGDC.
On March 4-5, 2008, DGDC held its annual consultation with the World Bank and the IMF and approved the
‘Belgium - Bretton Woods Institutions Strategic
Framework 2008-2011’ in order to come up with a strategic approach on
Development Cooperation with these Institutions and to provide
orientations to guide allocations to individual programs. You can download a report of the

2. With the International Monetary Fund (IMF)
, a ‘Belgian SubAccount’ has been set up
with three year funding for 2007-2009 working mainly with two departments of the IMF,
guided by a concept note for each department: Monetary and Fiscal Department and IMF-Institute.

3. Finally, the Embassy also follows up all matters related to the
Foreign Assistance of the USA for the developing world, and
reports regularly on the lively and interesting debates on
Development Cooperation existing with the various Think Thanks based in Washington DC.
