AFI EU FILM SHOWCASE

The annual European Union Film Showcase organized by the American Film Institute begins this week and Belgium will be represented by two films, each of which will be screened twice at the AFI Silver, 8633 Colesville Road, in downtown Silver Spring.

MOSCOW, BELGIUM (Aanrijding in Moscou)
Official Selection, 2008 Cannes Film Festival
Sun, Nov 9, 1:00; Mon, Nov 10, 9:20

Things go badly when forty-something Matty (Barbara Sarafian) backs her car into twenty-something Johnny’s (Jurgen Delnaet) delivery truck. Each slings healthy doses of verbal abuse at the other, so Matty is surprised when Johnny shows up unannounced and offers to fix her car. Her three children are even more surprised when things turn romantic between the mismatched pair, but when Matty’s estranged husband decides he wants her back, things turn even stranger in this festival favorite from Cannes. DIR Christophe Van Rompaey; SCR Pat van Beirs; PROD/SCR Jean-Claude Van Rijckeghem. Belgium, 2008, color, 102 min. In Dutch with English subtitles. NOT RATED.

Closing Night
ELDORADO
Official Oscar® Submission, Belgium
Sat, Nov 22, 8:00; Tues, Nov 25, 7:00

Director Bouli Lanners wrote and stars in this quirky road trip adventure that nimbly maneuvers between absurdist humor and darkly realistic pathos. Yvan is a world-weary vintage car dealer who returns home one night to find his house has been broken into, and the inept intruder is still there, hiding under his bed. The young would-be criminal, Elie, somehow strikes a chord with Yvan, who agrees not only to refrain from calling the police, but to drive the young man to his parents’ house—in his ’79 Chevy. Thus begins their strange journey through a series of increasingly ridiculous mishaps, until they reach their destination, where things take a melancholy turn.
DIR/SCR Bouli Lanners; PROD Jaques-Henri Bronckart. Belgium/France, 2008, color, 80 min. In French with English subtitles. NOT RATED.

Sat, Nov 22, 8:00: $12/$10 AFI Members. No passes accepted. AFI EU Showcase Passports are accepted.
Encore Screening, Tues, Nov 25, 7:00: Standard ticket prices. AFI Member passes and AFI EU Showcase Passports accepted.

Max Vandervorst Concert October 26

As part of the Kids Euro Festival organized by the French Presidency, creative musician Max Vandervorst will be giving a concert at La Maison Française, Embassy of France, on Sunday, October 26 at 6 p.m.

This Brussels-based musician will perform his Symphony for Abandoned Objects in which his “instruments” include a vacuum cleaner, flower pots, and other everyday objects. He has performed this show over 1,000 in Europe to great acclaim and this appearance in Washington (along with two performances for DC public school children the next day) will be his first in the U.S.

This completely original, non-verbal and highly entertaining one-man show will be fun for the whole family.

For more information, visit: www.kidseurofestival.org (Click on the Belgian flag). To reserve seats, please call 202 944-6558. There is no admission charge.

Open House Day

May 3, 2008

Following last year’s success with over 2000 visitors, the Embassy of Belgium participated to the EU Open House on Saturday May 3. From 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., visitors got a rare behind-the-scenes look at the European Embassies, many of which are among Washington’s historic and architectural treasures. For more information please click here

White House visits

The Embassy of Belgium receives, occasionally, requests from Belgian citizens to assist in the organization of visits to the WHITE HOUSE. The restrictions imposed by the American authorities are of a nature (e.g. visits have to be organized at least 6 months in advance) which prevents any effective assistance from the Embassy.

The situation regarding the White House tours is as follows:

Requests have to be submitted 4 to 6 months in advance.
Groups have to be a minimum of 10 or more.

Applications should be sent to: Washington@diplobel.org

Please note that the Embassy does not guarantee any visit as the permission for the tour is totally dependent on the White House which decides every case after a thorough security check and on a first come first served basis.
