The Monarchy
Belgium is a hereditary constitutional
monarchy.
The King is the head of the state.
The King is above all religions, ideologies,
political persuasions, debates or economic interests.
The King is the guardian of the country's
unity and independence.
King Albert II ascended to the throne on
August 9, 1993, becoming the 6th King of the Belgians. Albert has been
married to Donna Paola Ruffo di Calabria since July 1959.
The King and Queen have 3 children.
Since a recent constitutional reform, the
throne is accessible to male and female members of the Royal family.
